Synopsis:
Investing in mutual funds is an affordable and convenient way to invest your money for the long term.

A mutual fund is a company that invests in securities such as stocks and bonds. This can generate money when a security rises in value or it can pay dividends or interest to the fund. In order for a mutual fund company to purchase securities it must have investors or shareholders. Anyone can buy shares of mutual funds. Investing in mutual funds may be a wise choice for those who do not want to take a big risk in putting all of their money into one stock or bond. Mutual funds invest in a variety of securities and they tend to be somewhat more stable although the funds can still lose money.

There are three basic types of mutual funds-stock, bond, and money market. Stock mutual funds invest mostly in shares of stock issued Canadian or foreign companies. Bond mutual funds invest mainly in bonds. Finally, money market funds primarily invest in short term securities issued by the Canadian government.

Why invest in a mutual fund? First of all, you do not need a lot of money to invest. It is an affordable and convenient way to invest your money, and because you have experienced professionals constantly monitoring your account it provides a certain piece of mind. Qualified professionals are constantly tweaking your mutual fund investment based on extensive research in order to provide the best rate of return possible. Another great advantage is that you will have easy access to your mutual fund account and can withdraw your funds in the form of cash at any time. This is not to say there are not risks involved. The amount of risk you undertake depends on the funds you choose to invest in. Mutual funds are neither insured nor guaranteed and they must be though of as long term investments.

Before choosing what type of mutual fund to invest in, it is recommended to speak to an advisor. These professionals will be helpful in educating you about the different funds available and give you an idea of what will best suite your long term needs.
